Admiral Fitzroy Announces 25th Anniversary
Newport, RI B&B with long history celebrates with summer deals
The Admiral Fitzroy Inn, a historic B&B in Newport, Rhode Island, proudly announces its 25th year in business serving guests from around the globe in the heart of Newport’s harbor district. Built in 1854 by renowned architect Dudley Newton, the 18-room bed and breakfast stands tall as one of the area’s oldest establishments, with an even older history.
The Inn is named for the famous English Admiral and meteorologist who commanded the H.M.S. Beagle on Charles Darwin's expedition that inspired the Origin of the Species. Admiral Fitzroy was one of the first to attempt a scientific weather forecast. Returning from his famous journey with Darwin, he took up the newly created post of Head of Meteorology at the Board of Trade in London and began collecting the information necessary to predict the weather. Working on this knowledge, Fitzroy created the first easy-to-use barometer, leading to the first daily weather forecasts published in The London Times in 1860. The barometer is on display in the Inn’s lobby. Before it was named after the Admiral, however, the building was a convent on Spring Street, housing sisters of Saint Mary’s Church. The building was picked up and moved to Thames Street in 1986. “The Inn has such a unique Newport history,” says Angela Craig, innkeeper at the Admiral Fitzroy since 2003. “We’ve been lucky to welcome thousands of seasoned travelers from around the world.”
The inn now features delightfully unique, hand painted double occupancy rooms and boasts of its money-saving get-away packages, each featuring different area artisans, restaurants, and activities. Summer packages include the “Vineyard Escape,” “Culture and Comfort,” and “Bed and Brew,” among many others that offer local outings to fly kites, tour the mansions or harbor by boat, and revel in Newport’s culinary night life. To celebrate their 25th Anniversary on Thames, the Inn is offering a unique Anniversary Package.
While they do provide complimentary parking for guests, the Inn is in walking distance to just about everything there is to see in the city by the sea. A small, friendly, and knowledgeable staff provides comfortable service and excellent recommendations for those new to the area. The inn also has a charming signature continental breakfast to complement the stay, an elevator, and wireless internet access for guests. Perhaps the best way to experience the Admiral Fitzroy is on their rooftop deck overlooking the Newport harbor.
The Admiral Fitzroy was recently noted in the New York Times Travel section. For more information about the Inn, their packages, and history, visit admiralfitzroyinn.com
